What is Fostering All About

Foster from Hearts 4 Paws We are always looking for good foster homes to help us save more dogs from euthanasia. Foster homes provide shelter, love, food, toys, and a stable family home for the dog.

Hearts 4 Paws will provide any medical care the dog needs at our selected veterinarian clinics. Foster families are asked to bring the foster dog to at least 1 adoption event per month (which are usually held in West Valley City).

If you would like to foster a dog in need, please fill out a Foster application and email or mail it in. Once we receive it, we’ll be in contact with you to discuss the details.

Foster F.A.Q.

Q: Who provides food for the dog?

A: The foster family is responsible for providing food and water.

Q: What happens if we fall in love with our foster dog?

A: The foster family has the right of first refusal for adopting their foster dog. To adopt, the foster family does have to pay the adoption fee and complete the adoption contract.

Q: Where do the dogs that Hearts 4 Paws rescues come from?

A: Hearts 4 Paws dogs are rescued from local shelters. All dogs were surrendered by their owners and/or scheduled for euthanasia.

Q: How many dog adoption events are we required to bring our foster dog to?

A: Fosters are required to transport their fosters to 1 event a month.

Q: How long is a foster family obligated to foster the dog?

A: Until the dog gets adopted, unless you can no longer foster. Hearts 4 Paws needs one (1) week’s notice to find a new foster family (since all available foster families are already fostering a dog).

Q: What do we do with our foster dog if we go out of town?

A: If you cannot take your foster dog with you, Hearts 4 Paws can find another family to temporarily foster. However, Hearts 4 Paws needs at least two (2) weeks notice to find a temporary foster.

Q: What do the dogs come with?

A: A leash and a collar. Hearts 4 Paws also covers all medical including vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchip.

Q: What do I do if someone wants to adopt my foster?

A: They have to fill out an application. If approved, a “meet and greet” will be set up for the adopting family to get to know the dog and to help ease the transition.

Q: Does Hearts 4 Paws provide dog crates?

A: No. However, if you have a special hardship in obtaining a dog crate, let us know. We may be able to secure loaner crate that you could borrow while you are fostering.

Q: Where are Hearts 4 Paws dogs listed in order to find a family to adopt them?

A: They are listed on the Hearts 4 Paws Facebook page and on Petfinder.com. Foster families are also encouraged to place a listing for the dog on sites such as (KSL.com) and to network with friends and family to help find a “forever home” for the dog.

Hearts 4 Paws is a non-profit organization run by volunteers whose shared goal is to rescue, provide sanctuary, and ultimately to re-home abandoned, stray, and neglected animals. We never discriminate on the basis of health, age, or breed. By involving and educating the community, we work to raise the public’s awareness of the plight of homeless animals as well as realizing the benefits of adopting an animal in need.
